Ab dem 21. November 1944 suchten viele Menschen des niederländischen Ortes Steyl (Venlo) gleichermaßen Schutz vor den Angriffen der Alliierten und vor den Nachstellungen der deutschen Besatzung in den Klosterkellern der Steyler Missionare und der Steyler Missionsschwestern. Je länger sie dort bleiben mussten, desto schwieriger wurde die Situation. Lebensmittel wurden knapp und konnten nur unter Lebensgefahr beschafft werden, da der Ort an der Maas regelmäßig unter Beschuss lag. Lange 100 Tage mussten die Menschen schließlich in den Kellern ausharren, bis sie am 1. März 1945 befreit wurden.

Am 26. Januar 1945 riefen die Pfarrer die Menschen auf, eine Novene, also ein neuntägiges Gebet, zu halten. Damit sollte Gott um ein baldiges Ende des Krieges gebeten werden und dass er die Menschen vor Hunger bewahre sowie die Menschen, die Nahrung beschafften, schütze. Die Novene begann am 28. Januar 1945 und endete am 5. Februar 1945.

Die „Novene für Menschen in Krieg und Not“ greift diese Novene der Steyler Bevölkerung von 1945 auf und lädt ein, nicht nur in der Zeit vom 28. Januar bis 5. Februar die Novene zu beten.

On November 21, 1944, many people of the Dutch town of Steyl (Venlo) sought protection from the Allies‘ attacks and the German occupation in the monastery cellars of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD) and the Missionary Sisters (SSpS). The longer they had to stay, the more difficult the situation became. Food became scarce and could only be procured at the risk of life because the place on the Meuse was regularly under fire. The people waited 100 days in the cellars until they were liberated on March 1, 1945. In the book 100 Days in the Monastery Cellars of Steyl, this time is impressively recorded in excerpts from diary entries.

On January 26, 1945, the Fathers Keuller, Windhausen and Peeters called on the people to hold a novena, a nine-day prayer, to ask God for an early end to the war, to protect people from hunger and to pray for those who provided food. The novena began on January 28, 1945 and ended on February 5th. The novena included praying the Rosary, the Litany of the Saints and the Holy Mass daily.

This Novena for People in War and Need replaces the 1945 novena of the Steyl people. I invite you to pray this novena at any time, not only January 25 to February 5.

A partir del 21 de noviembre de 1944 muchas personas del lugar Steyl (Venlo) en Holanda buscaron por igual protección de los ataques de los aliados y de la persecución de las tropas de ocupación alemana en los sótanos del monasterio de los Missioneros de Steyl y de las misioneras igualmente de Steyl.Entre más se prolongaba el tiempo que tuvieron que permanecer ahí, más difícil se ponía la situación. Durante largos 100 días las personas tuvieron resistir en los sótanos del monasterio, hasta que fueron liberados el 1 de marzo de 1945. A partir del 26 de enero de 1945 hacen un llamado los sacerdotes Keuller, Windhausen y Peters a las personas de hacer una novena, es decir, una oración de nueve días. Con esa se pedía a Dios la pronta terminación de la guerra, preservar a las personas del hambre así como proporcionar el alimento y protección. La novena comenzó el 28 de enero de 1945 y finalizó el 5 de febrero de 1945. La novena incluía el rezo diario del rosario, la letanía de todos los santos y la misa diaria por estas intenciones.
